We had a very cloudy day on 11th November 2019 at NSO-HQ but luckily thecosmiccourier had better luck in Birmingham and entered our competition with this amazing photo.

We asked him how he took this photograph and if he had any tips for other trying to do the same:

I'm as amateur as it gets really. I used a Celestron 114EQ Telescope and an Explore Scientific Solar Filter with my phone attached to the scope. (And a towel over my head so I could see the screen and focus).

This was the second time I'd attempted imaging the sun but a chance of seeing Mercury Transit was too good to pass up.

So I'd say you really don't need lots of expensive gear to have a go at basic Astronomy and imaging. I'm a firm believer in getting the most out of the equipment you have. It's a shame a lot of people are put off or become disheartened because they think they can't get involved without spending lots of money."
