Accessibility Statement

The Schools' Observatory is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, including young people, educators, and those with disabilities. We aim to support all users in exploring space and science, regardless of their individual needs or technology access.

We are actively working to ensure our website complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines help make web content more usable and accessible for everyone.

Measures to Support Accessibility

  • Designing pages with clear structure and simple language
  • Providing alternative text for meaningful images
  • Using high-contrast colour schemes and readable fonts
  • Reviewing content and functionality against accessibility standards
  • Supporting keyboard and screen reader use across most pages

Known Accessibility Limitations

We are aware that some older resources and content may not fully meet accessibility standards. These include:

  • Older PDF files without tags or structured headings
  • Interactive content or games that may not work with assistive technologies
  • Pages which do not read efficiently with screen reader technology
  • Some colour contrast problems on icons and boxes

We are gradually updating this content and welcome your input to help us prioritise improvements.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy Statement

At The Schools' Observatory, we are committed to promoting equity, celebrating diversity, and fostering inclusion in everything we do.

We believe that science and education should be accessible to everyone—regardless of background, identity, or circumstance. Our mission is to inspire and support young people from all walks of life to engage with space, science, and learning.

Our Commitments

  • Ensuring our resources reflect a wide range of voices and perspectives
  • Creating inclusive content that is accessible and engaging for all learners
  • Collaborating with educators, students, and communities to remove barriers to participation
  • Providing a welcoming environment for users of all backgrounds and identities
  • Regularly reviewing and improving our practices to support EDI goals

We recently invested several thousand pounds in commissioning 4 external audits of our website - these have provided us with a set of recommendations which we will implement over the next 2 years.

We understand that inclusion is an ongoing process. We are always learning, listening, and evolving to better meet the needs of our diverse audience.
