Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz
Early Life
Enrico Ramirez Ruiz was born and raised in Mexico City. His parents were chemists who worked for the local university. From a young age, he wanted to answer the big questions, such as how the Universe was made.
Year born: ~1975
Research Areas: Stellar explosions, Gamma-Ray Bursts, Black holes, Neutron stars, Gravitational Waves
Kepler's Laws: Habitable Zones
In 2017, the Liverpool Telescope was involved in the investigation of an exciting new discovery: the star system TRAPPIST-1.
Explore Tides
The ocean’s tides rise and fall every day, but have you ever wondered what causes them? The Moon and Sun both play a role in shaping the movement of water across the Earth.
Star Formation
Stars form inside huge clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. These regions are sometimes known as “stellar nurseries” or “star-forming regions”.
Blackholes
Black holes are objects in space.
Gravitational Lensing
Space is not flat. It is 3D, and we say that everything in it is held together on an imaginary surface we call spacetime. The idea of spacetime was put forward in Einstein's theory of relativity.
Gravitational Waves
Gravitational waves are tiny, invisible ripples in space. They travel for huge distances at the speed of light. The waves squeeze and stretch any objects they pass, but only by a tiny amount.
Relativity
Gravity is the force we are most familiar with in everyday life. It has been studied for longer than the other forces of nature. However, it is also the least well understood.
Gravity
Gravity is the name of the force that pulls objects together. It is a non-contact force. This means it acts on objects that are not touching each other.
Tides
The level of the sea rises and falls about two times each day. We call these changes tides.
