Early Life

Sara Sabry was a curious child, and she has always loved space. She earned her degree in Cairo, where she grew up. Her degree is in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus on Mechatronics.

After this, she did her Master's in Biomedical Engineering, and she earned this in Italy. At present, Sabry is doing her PhD in Aerospace Sciences. Her PhD is at the UND NASA funded Human Spaceflight lab!

Career Highlights

On the 4th of August 2022, Sabry went into space. She went on Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. Doing this made Sabry the first Egyptian Astronaut to go to space! As well as this, it also made her the first African and Arab woman to reach space.

Sabry was chosen by a group called Space for Humanity to go on a mission to experience something called the 'Overview effect'. She could then return to Earth and learn how to implement it here. Space for Humanity is a program that creates a shift in perspective for citizen astronauts. This shift happens when we see the Earth from space, known as the Overview Effect. This experience and shift can inspire a sense of connection, beauty and fragility. Sabry is the world's second citizen astronaut to have done this, which is a great achievement.

In 2021, Sabry became Egypt's first female Analog astronaut. She was part of a moon mission simulation at LunAres. In this mission, she was the crew medical officer. Sabry also completed a programme that made her the first Egyptian woman qualified to do research in space!

Sabry is the deputy CTO of a growing startup group in Berlin. This group is focused on augmented reality for mobile. She has also founded the 'Deep Space Initiative'. This company offers programmes in education and research for everyone around the world. The Deep Space Initiative will make a big difference for anyone who wants to get involved in the space industry. DSI's main program is the Andromeda program. This shows future space researchers the challenges of space exploration.

Sara Sabry also does lots of public outreach. She speaks about her own experiences and wants to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.

Legacy

Sabry was given the IAF Emerging Space Leader award. As part of this award, she travelled to Paris and met other space experts like herself.

Sabry has made history by becoming the first Egyptian, Arab, and African woman to enter space! Being the CEO and founder of the DSI means her work will be helping future bright minds find their way into space research.

Other Interests

Sabry enjoys keeping herself active. She has spent time as a yoga instructor and as a CrossFit coach in Egypt. She has lots of hobbies, including MMA, flying, and baking.
